He Prepares a Table for Me: Finding Hope in Psalm 23

Psalm 23 – A Timeless Source of Comfort
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” – Psalm 23:5 (ESV)
Psalm 23 is one of the most well-known and frequently quoted passages in the Bible. Many memorise it as children, sing it in hymns, and recite it in times of distress. However, its depth and meaning often go unnoticed until life brings moments of struggle. I discovered the true power of Psalm 23 during a dark season of my life. I had battled anxiety and depression for years, and in a moment of desperation, I turned to the Bible, unsure where to begin. Psalm 23 came to mind, and as I read and dissected each verse, I found a lifeline—a source of hope and restoration.
The Dark Cave of Anxiety and Depression
If you’ve ever experienced anxiety or depression, you understand the weight of hopelessness. It feels like being trapped in a dark cave, surrounded by unwanted guests—fear, loneliness, sadness, worry, and fatigue. For a long time, that was my reality.
Then came a breakthrough. With my Bible open to Psalm 23 and my journal in hand, I began to study the passage. The first realization struck me powerfully:
The Lord is My Shepherd – I Lack Nothing
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” – Psalm 23:1-4 (ESV)
I understood that because the Lord is my Shepherd, I will lack nothing. That He will give me rest and lead me to path of righteousness. That even though I walk around in this darkness, I won’t fear, because He is with me. He comforts me and protects me. God was with me in my dark cave. This is the promise in Psalm 23. God is with us, always. I saw a glimpse of hope. I was not alone in this. God, the creator of the universe was with me, so what could go wrong? Here’s the thing, even though I now had light shining into my dark place, I still had unwanted guests who were stubborn and refused to leave.
A Table in the Presence of My Enemies
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” – Psalm 23:5 (ESV)
This verse initially confused me. I didn’t think I had enemies. In my mind enemies are people you are ready to fight with, go to war with. But then I realised my “enemies” were right there in my cave—fear, doubt, loneliness, anxiety. God didn’t remove them instantly, but He did something profound: He prepared a feast for me in their presence. A delicious, nourishing, filling, restorative feast. Each dish served to grow and strengthen me.
That feast? His Word.
God’s Word: A Feast Against Our Enemies
Just as God provided a feast for me, He offers His Word to sustain and strengthen us. Each verse counters the lies of our struggles:
- Fear: “Fear not, for I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you.” – Isaiah 41:10 (ESV)
- Doubt: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart… He will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)
- Lack: “Those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.” – Psalm 34:10 (ESV)
- Loneliness: “He will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:8 (ESV)
- Sadness: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted.” – Psalm 34:18 (ESV)
- Anxiety: “Do not be anxious about anything… The peace of God will guard your heart.” – Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV)
- Fatigue: “He gives power to the faint and increases strength to the weak.” – Isaiah 40:29 (ESV)
An Overflowing Cup: God’s Abundant Provision
“You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” – Psalm 23:5 (ESV)
God doesn’t just give us enough—He gives in abundance. His presence, peace, and provision overflow in our lives, even in the midst of our struggles. When we turn to Him, we find more than just relief; we find renewal. God doesn’t always remove our struggles immediately, but He nourishes us in the midst of them.
Taste and See That the Lord is Good
Psalm 34:8 says, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!” (ESV). God’s provision isn’t just about meeting physical needs—it’s about sustaining us spiritually. Even in our hardest moments, we can trust that He is still good.

Psalm 23 is more than a comforting passage—it’s an invitation to trust God’s provision, even when life feels overwhelming. Whatever you face, know that God has prepared a table for you. Come and feast on His Word.
